In a breathtaking final, both the scheduled and super over in terms of the runs were tied, only by a greater number of boundaries England won the super over and the world cup. The first ever one day match decided by a super over.
History of super over: Super over first used in 2008 in the T20 format cricket, in ODI it was introduced in the 2011 world cup. After the 2015 World cup, it was decided that the super over would only be used in the final as a tiebreaker.
Rules of Super Over: In ODI, the super over is reserved only for the final to be decided. Consisted of six balls or a single over, a over to be played each that is the tiebreaker. The team batting in the scheduled second innings will bat first in the super over. In the super over an innings is consisted of only two wickets, hence each side will nominate only 3 batsmen. So, each side for the super over consists of 3 batsmen, as only a single over to be bowled, one bowler and all the players to be nominated from the playing eleven. In the event of a tied super over, the team scored most boundaries will win.
Super over in the world cup final: On the pursuit of 242 runs England had fallen short, tied with New Zealand’s score. England’s final savior Stokes with his 110 run match-saving partnership’s partner Buttler was nominated to open in the super over. In the scheduled over innings, Stokes made unbeaten 84 runs with 5 fours and 2 sixes and Buttler with 6 boundaries made 59 in 60 balls. For Newzealand Trent Boult was given the responsibility of bowling the only over. Stokes had the opening strike made 3 runs of Boult’s first ball slogging a slower delivery between backward point and short third man. After one run by Buttler, Stokes hit a boundary in the deep midwicket on an inswinging fuller delivery, on the fourth ball a single and the next ball a double by Buttler was scored. On the last ball, Buttler finished with a boundary. As England made 15 runs in the super over the target for New Zealand was 16 runs.
New Zealand ‘s opener for the super over was Guptill and Neesham. Neesham was on strike for the opening ball. England’s Jofra Archer bowled the super over opened with a wide, on the first legal ball Neesham took 2 runs and on the second bowl a massive six into the gallery over the deep midwicket. On the next two balls, Neesham took two successive double runs. On the fifth ball, Neesham took one run. So, Guptill came on the strike to face the only ball left. Archer’s final delivery was on Guptill’s pad , which he played toward the deep midwicket, where Jason Roy quickly collected the ball and had thrown the ball at the keeper’s end, where in pursuit of winning the world cup the batsmen went for the second but had fallen short, as Guptill dives for the run and Buttler dived to break the wicket. Buttler, the English wicket keeper was successful of breaking the wicket, New Zealand tied with England and on the basis of greater count of boundary 26 to 17 England clinched the title.
